I took it apart when I bought it to clean per the instructions and it has 3 filters. 1 foam pre filter, then the ionizer grid consisting of several layers, then an activated charcoal filter. I removed the ionizer grid for cleaning which is done by soaking in dishwasher detergent or by placing in the dishwasher itself for 1/2 hour. I couldn't believe the sink water after cleaning. It was filthy black! Best I can tell you about it.
