Strapping Tape Problem

I want to share a problem I ran into with strapping tape. I've never used strapping tape before in boat building but it sounded like a straight forward deal to join hull and deck. I found a roll that was probably over ten years old and used it. It held just fine but after my inner glass tape job had cured and I went to remove the strapping tape, the plastic coating peeled off the adhesive and strands, leaving them stuck to the hull. I tried an adhesive remover which produced a slimy, gooey mess, and finally resorted to paint thinner, which made a thinner, sticky mess, which I was mostly able to remove with alcohol. I had to use acetone to finally get rid of it so I could do final sanding.

I couldn't find any reference to anyone else having this problem, but hope it might help someone. My advise is to spring for a fresh roll of tape.
