I'm in the beginning stages of building a Guillemot double kayak. I'm proposing carving hatch covers in 3D, west coast native style, to match the bowsprit. I'm proposing to use rare-earth magnets to retain the covers in place (with an appropriate leash) I've experimented a little with the concept, and see no reason for not doing so, so far. I've been following the discussions regarding hatch sealing gaskets, etc, and see no problems other than working to a reasonable degree of tolerance, well within my abilities at least. Magnets would be epoxied and glassed in appropriate locations. I'd appreciate any comments or criticisms. Have I missed something or are there other things I should take into consideration?
