Car Clips for a gutterless rack connection. *Pic*

Everyone may be sorry that I now know how to work my scanner, but here is my illustrated questions. In the picture you see a clip that is used to fasten a roof rack to a gutterless car, I think. Where does this fasten to the car. The only thing I see on my car is a small hidden groove between two rubber seals that the door closes on. And this groove pinches off pretty tight when you move to the front portion of the door which makes it look like you couldn't drive the clip in even with a hammer. Gordon posted on March 5th that he built a "S" shaped piece of metal to do what I think the clips do. If the clips do go into this groove it looks like it would press the rubber door gasket so much that it might leak water when it rains. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
John
