I finally broke down and ordered a water stone the other day. It has 600 on one side and 1000 on the other. For the first time I was really able to make my blades sharp. I was using an oil stone which was too small to get the whole blade on at once. Made all the difference in the world. I have a cheap record flat sole spoke shave from home depot, but I got a hock (sp) flat iron for my block plane.
