I got turned away from varnish when a couple of posters that attended the wooden boat show in California told me all the varnished boats looked very amber in color. One mfr. told them the amber color these days is added to the varnish, people just expect it to look like that. I didn't use Ding-All Ultra Clear epoxy just to cover it with a dark amber coat! I like the wood grain the way it is.

The polyester resin is water clear in the thickness I intend to use. I bought a gallon from the local surfboard mfr for $15 - it has lots of UV protectant, as does my epoxy - I don't really need anything else to protect the epoxy, just so the finish protects itself, I guess. They added the wax & styrene to it for me, necessary for a finish coat, so that it hardens to a polishable surface.

I've seen their top-end boards coated with this stuff and they look great.

I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
