Wrapping The Coaming Lip

I can't seem to wrap the 1/8" x 3/4" strips around and keep the distance above the deck even (I'm tyring to make the lamination 1 strip at a time). Do I need to notch the strips to make them go where I want? Any suggestions?
I'm using white oak.
