white-ish water

In my hometown of Columbia, SC we have two basic types
of paddling: shallow, wide rivers or a man made lake.
I am looking for a kayak to take in the rivers, but it
will have to withstand a few nudges and scrapes from
rocks. This is not serious whitewater, just riffles,
etc. Is is possible/advisable to take a strip kayak in
such a river? How much 'glass should be applied? Any?
I am hoping that I don't have to buy a plastic boat.
Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks!
