carlins and deck beams

first of all. I wanted to make a boat with a very low profile. so I worked it out so I would just perfectly fit under the deck. I have quite low deck beams and the carlins are in the way. are they nescesarie? I've seen boats made without them. is that ok? I'm buil;ding a modified version of the yare by chesapeake. also does anyone know any tricks for keeping stuff off paint and varnish while painting? my mom is forcing tme to do it outside. just so you knows I'm not a loser 45 year old whoo still lives with his mom I'm 15 just had to get that accross
