fiberglass delamination

A friend of mine asked me how to repair delaminating fiberglass on his one year old cedar strip canoe. He is not sure if the resin used was epoxy or polyester. How can he find out which type was used? Or does that even matter as far as repairing it goes? I suggested removing a small piece and see what it sands like. What would be the best way to repair it, remove all the delaminating glass or inject new epoxy and clamp it?

TIA

Greg
