lumber problems

I purchased my plans and all the supplies needed to build my Chesapeake 17' except for the batten used to draw the curves on the hull blanks and the wood for sheer clamps. According to the plans and manuals the batten should measure 3/4" X 1" X 12' and the sheer clamps should measure 1" X 4" X 37'. I went to a local lumber yard and they had plenty of 1" X 1" and 3/4" X 3/4" wood but nothing was 3/4" X 1". Have I read something wrong? Does my lumber yard suck? Can I use 3/4" X 3/4" for my purposes? They looked at me like I was asking something really odd.

Cheers, Dan
