Interesting idea, Brian. 
How about making it from a scrap of plexiglas - that way you'll be able to see the cut line without needing to open up a bunch of area around the blade. Think I'll try it next time I'm cutting plywood with the sabre saw.

: Here's an idea of how it could be done: 1) Cut a piece of material
: to the size of the sole plate.
: 2) Mark a line down the center, then use your jig saw to cut a slot in the
: plate.
: 3) Slip the plate onto the base from behind, so that the slot faces forward
: and the blade is in the slot. Mark the location of the front of the blade.
: 4) Remove the plate and cut away some of the material from in front of the
: blade, so you can see your cut line as you work.
: 5) Apply double sided tape and attach the plate to the sole of your saw. Put
: the side with the smoothest cut suface downward, to give maximum support
: to the workpiece.
: 6) Go cut some plywood.
