Sounds like he didn't know and (like many people who don't know), made up some half asked answer. Home Depots in L.A. area carried 1/2" particle board and MDF when I was there (at 3 locations) looking for ply 2 weeks ago. "Managers" and other people who should know give me bs all the time, maybe the Home depot you went to was just out of stock, because particle board is at least 1/3 CHEAPER than MDF and has uses that do not require MDF's qualities, why stop carrying it other than they don't have room for it AND MDF? Think it is either that (and so what if the customer has to pay more for MDF if he really wants particle) or they are just temporarily out of stock.
