Strip: Internal strongback

OK, it's time for The Plunge; the forms are here, the strips are here, and it's sawdust time for a Spring Run. For a number of reasons, I'm doing an internal strongback, but I want more rigidity than a simple 2x4. Planning on laminating 1/2" ply into a 2x3.5in beam, probably with vertical pieces topped and bottomed by a horizontal plate; should that be stiff enough to keep this newbie (first effort!) straight?
Thanks in advance for any input!Craig
