Hi John, the polished bars sound pretty cool but not the sort of thing you would want to do on an entire boat. I polished a desk I built one time and then waxed it. Not only did it have a silky smooth finish but it was increadibly slipery. I finish lots of cabinetry and only ever got to 220 grit. What makes more difference is how the finish is applied. I usually spray but if you are brushing buy the best brush you can get a hold of and take good care of it. There is something very nice about using a good China brisle brush much like using a well tuned plane. It just works good and is a joy to hold. Enjoy, Steve.
