To precoat or not to precoat....

I searched the archives and haven't been able to find a discussion on the merits of precoating and not precoating. It seems like most people do a precoat, while a good deal of the reading I have done does not mention or recommend it.

I understand the advantages of precoating, but don't know what disadvantages there are except the extra step.

I built a canoe using system three and did not precoat with no problems. I am using Raka for my kayak and am trying to decide which way to go.
