stems and design questions

Why, when many use very similar looking stem designs, would there be an advantage to a plumb stem line. I admit, I like it and will probably build mine that way, but what are the tradeoffs?
Also, these stems look quite strong without an internal or external add-on stem piece, but I know a guy that does not use them, and has had no problems. Please comment. Thanks - Scott
