Paddle question

I'm about to glue up the block to cut the paddle blades out of. I want to make a decorative strip on each side of the blade when the paddle is finished. If I use some small peices when I glue the block together, will this make the paddle weaker when it's finished? I will be using ash, walnut and cherry so I don't want to have to use too much cloth other than a 2 inch strip on the tip.
