I think pine, fir and hemlock are more closely related, than any of these to cedar.
Al, My field guide says you're correct Eastern hemlock is part of the pine family. The pines are characterized as resinous trees with soft white wood. In addition to hemlock this family includes larches, firs and spruces. Hemlock bark is high in tannin content, its defense against insects, perhaps that is why it has less resin than the other members of the family. Western red cedar and Atlantic white cedar are members of the Cypress family.
