I grew up on a hundred acre farm with an irrigation pond, so there was always a boat or raft around. I got my first boat when I was 12 or 13; A very used Popular mechanics boxy flat-bottomed sailboat for $25. When I was 16 I had a fiberglass whitewater kayak custom made for me. Still have the boat and the original sales receipt.

After years of backpacking and hiking my feet began to give in, so boating seemed to be a good extension and direction. My brother built a six-hour canoe from Uncle John’s and that gave me the bug.

Right now I'm in the process of building a house so all boat projects are on hold. There is some sailboating in NM but not much kayaking. For that matter not much water! When I get back to it this fall I'll be working on just one boat at a time. Cramped for room.

Wee Lassie II by Mac McCarthy. Rebuilding due to the zero humidity in New Mexico.

Wee Lassie by Mac McCarthy.
Building from plans. Stapleless, so far. Main wood is African Mahogany. Accents are Black Walnut, Maple, and Padauk.

Walrus by George Putz.
This is my current paddle around boat that I use to play speedboat Frogger with. I'm thinking of replacing the canvas skin with synthetic.

Building from plans. Forms are cut out. This will be on the back burner for a long time.

Beaver canoe by Iain Oughtred.
Building from plans. Forms are cut out. This boat is a good design. Look forward to building it.

Mystery project. More on that later. By the way.. it's coming along fine but taking three times longer to build than I first expected.

Skin on frame. If we ever get the basic landscaping done around out house, We'll build my wife two SOF's (one will be airplane portable) and a folding kayak for me. Got to have them done for R2K3!

I've also been messing around with Ross Leidy's boat design program. I'm going to do a model from the program and maybe build a full size boat from it.

Thanks Nick for a great Bulletin Board :D
