Can Varnish Be Sprayed?

All the talk about how to get a good, smooth finish with varnish got me wondering if it can be sprayed. If it is thinned some, and sprayed with a gun that can finely atomize the varnish, what would be the drawback? Is there something fundamental about the nature of varnish that I am simply not aware of?
