In Response To: Keel tape on Pygmy (Rick)

Rick,

I had the same problem when building my Arctic Tern. I had gone to great lengths for a showroom quality job when I glassed and filled my hull and was very frustrated. I tried to use epoxy to bury the edge, it was a mistake. It didn't cover the edges of the tape and just gave me messy runs to clean up. After that, I pre-wet the strips in epoxy before applying them and things went much easier. My advice is to carefully hand sand the offending outer edges of the strip so they are feathered into the rest of the hull epoxy. Start (very lightly) with 60 grit paper and work to 100 and 150. Remember, you don't want to cut into the underlying cloth, just smooth the outer edge of the reinforcing tape. You'll use this same method later when you clean up the overlapping cloth on the deck (done in two halves), and the 1" overhang on the side panels when you glass the deck to the hull.

Good luck,

David
