Re: Transporting kayaks: upright or inverted?

I have always carried my kayaks on the roof of my car just resting on foam noodles, boat upright. The bow and stern lines tied to the bumpers of the car are of course fastened to the grab loops. The lines pull the boat downward. An upright boat position is more secure. If the boat was inverted the ropes would rely solely on the strength of the grab loops and fasteners. An upright position pulls the boat downward with the ropes on top of the foremost ends of the deck giving more strength. Jim
: O.K., now that I'm getting ready to cartop my shiney new boat to some serious
: water, the question becomes: Which orientation is best? I suspect keel
: down, since the natural motion of the hull against the air pressure
: created while the vehicle is moving will want to push the bow up, and that
: this can be counteracted by the bow tie-down. I'm certain there will be
: some flex no matter what at 65mph, but am I correct that keel down is the
: way to go? Thanks. Chuck
