VARNISH AND TAPE

Will "blue tape" or 3m fineline tape be a problem on varnish? 3m fineline tape pulled up a good amount of polyurethane paint when I varnished deck and touch up is required. Also any secrets on Interlux 333 thinner and Interlux brightsides one part polyurethane paint? I did not thin paint and the paint job is a disaster. I plan to use directions on can and will sand a good amount and try again. Building a CLC 17LT and this set back is the worse to be so close to finishing. Thanks.
