Jeff,
I have to agree with the lighting assessment. Since I work on the second floor of a barn, there are no windows and little reflection off walls or ceiling. I found a quick/cheap solution was to hang fluorescents from rope stringers (see pic). I also have an old examination light I got at a surplus sale for detail work.
Some type of vacuum system is a must also. I have a dust collection system, but still need to rewire it for 220 and give it its own power socket. I'm using a shop vac for now which is handy for general cleanup and connecting to my ROS, etc. If you do go for a dust collection system, I strongly recommend a separator. You can get a special "lid" for a trash can which goes between the vacuum and the buisness end of the hose. This way any junk that you pickup, e.g. screws, wood, fiberglass chips, etc, don't go flying into the duct fan.
I eventually will string up some kind of plastic sheet tent for use as a "dust free" varnishing room. That project is probably next on my list.
