Re: Bevelling first strip

Ideally when you make the rolling bevel at the sheer, the hull strip and the deck strip will have the same bevel. This will create the best fitting joint. In order to do this you want to bisect the angle made between the deck and the hull.

On each form make a mark at the sheer line which splits the angle in two equal parts. Towards the middle of the boat this will be easy because the joint is almost straight so a horizontal line will do fine. Near the ends the angle may get quite accute.

As a guide for making the rolling bevel, you can clamp a short strip next to your guide line mark so that it sticks out beyond the form. As you plane the bevel, you can hold it against the boat and compare it to the strip.

You can get pretty close by eyeballing it. To get a really tight joint in the end, you can drag a thin saw through the joint just before you tape the fiberglassed pieces together.

: I am ready to install the first strips on my Great Auk. Nick's book says to
: cut off the bead and bevel the edge where it will meet the deck half. With
: the bottom facing up I will have to flip the strip and visualize it upside
: down and then estimate a rolling bevel - all while holding the 18' strip
: in some yet-to-be-devised clamp. Can I just leave it the edge square until
: I finish the hull and flip the boat? Although the strip will be attached
: to frames, I can then use a rabbbet plane which cuts right to the edge.
