As you state, it's more aerodynamic and eliminates problems with water collection in the rain. It also allows the boat to drain and dry out better.
For the record, I don't use a stern line, since the exhaust pipe on my car is too close to the tow hook and the line burns through. I typically don't bother with a bow line either. My rack is very solidly mounted on the car and the saddles hold the boat tightly enough that it doesn't shift. Frankly, I'm more concerned about damaging the boat from the tension of the bow and stern lines than losing it off the rack. For longer drives, I'll use a second strap on the front rack, just for peace of mind
