Warren,
I used water based stain to get green accent strips on my Guillemot last winter. I idea was to stain before the strip went on to get one forest geen strip at the water line. I really drenched the strips with a stain to get maximum absorption. It looked fine until I started to fair the hull and it started to come off as I sanded. I had two choices mask off the strip and restain or sand it all off. I was not confident that I could get a crisp line as you can with paint so I chose the latter and sanded it all off. Luckly I was able to get 98% of it off.
I ended up using pin striping tape from a boat store for the job.
Getting stain to look even is hard enough with soft wood. I would recomend that you do it after you have sanded and to use water based stain so that you don't have problems with epoxy.
