Best I have used is epoxy resin. Save your pennies and get a pint to a quart size batch. Defender's catalog has 3 or more brands for under $20. (www.defenderus.com) You could probably find several other suppliers and brands in that price range. Check with Raka (www.raka.com) for their smallest size.
I have used epoxy and varnish on the same frame, and after two years outside (hey , I work slow) the varnish is pretty well shot, and the wood underneath is gray, but the resin coated areas look like new.
