Bob,

You might consider not filling the weave on the inside. Often it is left unfilled to give a little bit better grip. Whether you go for varnish right away or want to fill the weave with epoxy, water and a scotchbrite pad should give the surface enough tooth to hold the coating. Make certain you give all those nooks and crannies extra time to dry off.
