Baidarka covering questions

I'm in the process of covering my baidarka (based on the SBJ Zimmerly article and the Brinck book).
I keep wondering about the small holes I end up making in the canvas as a result of the sewing process. They are around 1/16th or so in diameter. There are some places where the thread has made a bigger hole. I'm wondering whether the primer and paint will fill these holes? Is there something I need to use to fill the holes? Do I use roofing caulk? (I plan to use roofing paint as Brinck suggests.) Am I pulling the canvas too tight? How do I seal the seams? Also, how do I sew the darts that must go into the stern area? Do they go from the outside corner of the gunwale end to the end of the stern at a 45 degree angle, or, do I go from the end of the gunwale toward the bow, angling at a 45 degree angle?
Any assistance here would be great.
Thanks, Ed Stevens
