In Response To: Gel coat (Allen Lipson)

: Just bought a used fiberglass kayak (VCP Pintail)and was wondering whether
: there was a way to get rid of some of the scratches in the gel coat on the
: bottom and side of boat.

: Thanks for any advice

If the scratches are not too deep you can use fiberglass rubbing compound(Boatlife) . Automotive rubbing compound is not hard enough for gelcoat. Use a handheld grinder (7"or so )and a lambswool buffing bonnet which turns at about 3500 rpm. Buff the compound in until it disappears. If the scratches are deep you may have to wet sand with 500 0r 600 wet or dry paper. Try not sand through. After using the finest sandpaper buff out the fine scratches with the compound.
