similar hatch problem and solution

In Response To: VCP Hatches On Chesapeake Kayaks (Bobby Curtis)

I wanted to put some standard round hatches in (8" in the front, 10" in the back - about $25 bucks each from Hamilton Marine) my kayak so I created a ring of redwood and mounted and shaped it so that the sides of the hatches are even with the deck allowing water to flow off and then put a pywood ring on the flat underside and mounted the hatches on top. The resulting flanges were shaped until they were only about 1/8" to 1/2" thick and then glassed and epoxied along with the rest of the deck. Hopefully the picture will make this clearer.
