I think it can matter on an extremely small boat like a kayak. Between your weight and the boats weight, you can easily find yourself way over the design limits and be sitting much lower in the water, enjoying the reduced speed that comes with increased wetted area, and getting soaked a lot more because you're now plowing into and under waves instead of bobbing up over them.
