Questions on Petrel Endform Assembly

Submitted bychrisail1946 onFri, 04/19/2019 - 09:07

Appreciate any help with my concerns below concerning build of Petrel. Thanks  Chris

1.      I’m ready to assemble the bow and stern endforms. After assembly, the lower edges of the endforms will project outside the envelope of the frame. Do the edges need to be beveled before the bow frames 1,2 and 3 are mounted?

2.      Any chance there’s a photo of this assembly?

My frames are made from ¾ inch particle board. The note on sheet 2 of the construction plan says “cut the thickness of the bow endform out of the middle of frames 1,2 and 3. Removal will cause the edge of the endforms to extend outside envelope of the frames. The figure of the assembly on sheet 2, shows the frames extending to the edge of the endform after attachment, but if I remove a ¾” center section, the lower edge of a cut frame will be above the edge of the endform.

3.      This would cut each frame into two pieces. What  method has been used to attach each frame half to an end form?

Hi,

I don't see a way to attach a jpeg or other picture to a comment. What do I need to do? Thanks Chris

Across the top of the form you are typing your message on is a row of selections to enhance your letter. Click the small square that looks like two mountains with a moon above them - - 2nd box back from the word "normal"

Here's a couple shots of mine before and after stripping.. stations and bow form are 3/4 mdf (should have used plywood). I used hot glue to join the stations to bow form..  and yes bevel the inside stem prior to attaching it to the end-form

Scott,

It appears that the vertical height of each of the 3 fwd frames  matches the height of the bow endform at their location. This means you did not remove a 3/4" strip from the center of the form, but just cut the form in half and attached the halves to the endform. Am I correct?

Thanks for sharing,

Chris

Hey Chris:

Memory fades... I may have only used 1/2" for the end forms, but yes, I did remove end form thickness from center of forms as I recall at the time wishing I had done that when cutting stations from sheet, as opposed to cutting a strip out small pieces with a jigsaw..

On all kayaks I build I saw the top 3" off of the forms that are in the cockpit area then hot glue them back together with a strip equal to the saw blade kerf. When time to saw out the cockpit and work on it a couple hammer taps and these pieces at the top of the forms can be removed giving much better access.
