The Forum Slide Show

Submitted by admin on Mon, 04/02/2018 - 11:37

So, I got the slide show working. I've placed it on a couple different pages. The slideshow currently shows a randomly selected set of 10 images at a time. There are more than 10 images available, and the next time you refresh the page a different selection of 10 images will be displayed.

You can add images to the slide show by following this link: Add Slide Show Image. It will have you upload an image and ask for a description. You can only add an image if you are a registered user.

Epoxy Shrinkage (blunder?)

Submitted by JimD777 on Sat, 01/18/2020 - 21:47

I'm building a small stripper. I used 3/16" pawlonia strips for the hull, and WRC for the deck. As is my usual sequence, I stripped the hull, flipped it, stripped the deck, removed the deck, faired the hull interior, and fiberglassed the hull interior. I replaced forms 15, 12, 10 6, and 3 back in the hull at points I had pre-marked, before the epoxy was fully cured. I noticed that the forms fit well low in the hull, but there was a gap at the sheer, so I stretched tape across the hull to bring it in tight. One day later, the tapes strips were slack, and the forms fit snugly in the hull.

Restoring Folbot Super TSK - HELP!!!

Submitted by jdbeers on Sun, 01/05/2020 - 16:52

I have a 1980s era Folbot Super TSK (I'm pretty sure that's what it is) that I'm going to reskin and refinish, among other things. I've got some ideas on how to reskin but they're only ideas, so I could really use some help. I have limited funds but think I have the hand tools I need (hopefully). Here are my questions:

I was going to use heavy duty truck tarp material (it's a PVC coated polyester) for a new skin - will that work?

Christmas Poem dredged up from the Archives...not mine BTW

It isn't mine but it's good.

The Night Before Kayak Christmas

Southwind's adaptation of an old kayaker's verse

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the boathouse
Not a creature was stirring, not even a sea louse.
The sea socks were hung on the trailer with care,
In hopes that Saint Neptune soon would be there.

What was I doing 7 years ago today? Crazy paddling.

I was trying to find an old poem that I was sure I posted in the old trips forum. I didn't find the poem but I did find a trip report for December 19, 2012. Sadly, I cannot repeat this performance because the VJ is in dry dock and not ready for use. Have a read. WARNING: Make up a cup of steaming hot chocolate before reading this old story.

Converting a standard tandem to a sectional

Submitted by GreenGuy77 on Sat, 12/07/2019 - 15:29

Hello, and thank you for having me here. This is my first post so if I stray from some house rules feel free to call me out. I have a valley aleut sea 2 kayak. It cuts through the water great and my wife and I love paddling it. Key word paddling.... it’s 21’ long and we live in an apartment. Does anyone have any insight into converting this kayak into a sectional? Is it possible? Will it effect performance? How long will it take to assemble/disassemble? Can it be assembled/disassembles on location? I’m handy with fiberglass. How much special equipment, knowledge, skill etc...

Awlgrip for a Kayak Finish

Submitted by CA139 on Tue, 11/26/2019 - 17:54

Looking for the opinion of people who know more than I for using Awlgrip vs say varnish or gelcoat as a finish for a kayak. Is it a yacht quality finish the best you can get for a kayak? Is it worth it? Is it a good idea? Why or why not?

Frej thoughts

Submitted by JohnAbercrombie on Sun, 11/24/2019 - 11:52

George G asked me about Bjorn Thomassen's Frej design in the 'Basswood' thread.

I've built two Frej kayaks - one 16' and another longer 18' version for possible use on trips.

I like them both - they are quick, roll very easily and handle waves and wind well.

Basswood for strip building

Submitted by JohnAbercrombie on Fri, 11/22/2019 - 17:51

I'm building my current project (Njord by Bjorn Thomassen) with strips mostly from 'boards I'll never use' and leftovers around my garage shop.

I had a piece of basswood which I added to the stock for cutting into strips.

Those basswood strips came in handy when dealing with some areas where the strips had to twist a lot - the transition from the 'flat' rear deck to the area forward of the cockpit, near the sides of the deck.
