started stripping deck ... problems!

Submitted byNHrob onMon, 02/15/2021 - 12:27

Hi,

I just started stripping the deck on my Spring Run.   I have glued the first two strips en each side and am having trouble at the bow and stern tips.

How best do you join the strips at the ends?   Are there some good stripping videos that show this specifically?   I fear I am making a mess of it and have stopped for now.  I hope to send pics soon of it.

Thanks,

Rob

Hello Rob,

I wanted to post a photo but that is impossible here and has been for many months. This forum is a very distant shadow of what it once was. You can probably find a better form to ask questions on. Try the west coast paddlers forum. But, for a semblance of an answer to your question you need stem strips at the bow and stern. I usually use an inner and an outer stem on each. Not necessary but I like the exterior looks and the inner stem makes glassing the sharp "V" at both ends somewhat easier.

I bend and epoxy 4-5 strips of spruce together as they are formed over the bow and stern. After curing remove and trim up somewhat and use a couple screws to hold them in place. Use a rasp to taper the edges so the strips can be glued flat against them.

When done stripping I use a belt sander to flatten both bow and stern where the strips are attached until I have a flat approx. 1/2" to 5/8" wide then laminate several strips of hardwood - Maple usually - anything that will hold up better under use than softwood. This piece starts at the top of the deck and runs 12" to 16" under the hull getting thinneer as it goes until all the side stripping and stem material flow together.

There are several dealer web sites that have excellent books on stripping and are more than willing to answer on-line questions. Try to look through the FAQ's first as most all questions have been answered already - - many times over.

Some of the dealers - Laughing Loon / Guillemot / Blue Heron / Orca Boats / Bjorn Thomasson / Bear Mountain Boats etc. etc.
